No Time for Tilaawah?

Hazrat Mufti Muhammad Sahib رحمه الله wrote to his Shaikh, Hakeemul Ummah Hazrat Moulana Shah Ashraf Ali Thanwi Sahib رحمه الله that nowadays, due to him being occupied in the examinations in Darul Uloom Deoband, he is not getting time to make Tilaawah. He requested to be rectified if it was blameworthy.

Hakeem Ummah Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thaanwi Sahib رحمه الله replied that presently there is a preoccupation with examinations, when the examinations are over, some other work will come up. This chain of missing Tilawah may continue for the rest of your life. Every work (including Tilawah) that needs done must be done (on time). It should not be left out.

Reflect on why this excuse for recitation of Qur’ān and Zikrullah only? Why doesn’t it happen for eating, drinking, sleeping and other worldly activities?

The essence of the matter is that there is no concern. Due to carelessness, religious works are being neglected and left out. If someone gets a monthly salary and the salary is cut for being late at work, will the person ever be late? He will never be late, even if he or his wife gets sick. His children may be distressed but that does not stop him from presenting himself for work on time. There is so much preparation and concern for this perishable world, but not even a little value for Deen? A person can tolerate missing Tilawah of the Holy Qur’an but cannot endure and stomach missing a day at work.

Reflections
Steadfastness on ma’moolaat is fundamental for spiritual progress. It is a safety belt against sins and difficulties. Our Mashā’ikh were fortresses of diligence. Notwithstanding their occupation, Tilaawah was never left out. In the words of Hazrat Allamah Sayyid Sulaiman Nadwi Sahib رحمه الله; work is achieved through work.
