Dua When the New Year Begins

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Hisham رضی الله عنه reports that the Sahabah رضی الله عنهم would learn the following du’a when the new month or new year would begin,

O Allah, bring this [month or year] upon us with security, Iman, safety, Islam, protection from shaytan, and your pleasure.

(Al-Mu’jamul Awsat of Tabrani, Hadith #6237)

Muharram, not January

Hazrat Aaisha رضى الله عنها reports that Allah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “Whoever introduces something into our Deen which is not part of our Deen, that will be totally rejected” (Bukhari #2697)

Hazrat Mufti Muhammad Sa’eed Motara Sahib حفظه الله has said;

  • Saying Happy New Year in Muharram like the West in January
  • Emulating the Jews and Christians
  • Making new year resolutions in Muharram

all these innovations should be shunned. A true Muslim makes a resolution daily to be a better Muslim.

May Allah Ta’ala grant us the abilty to refrain from innovations and become true Muslims. Ameen
