Practical Steps for The Escaper
Insha’Allah, this article outlines practical steps for those struggling with any level of addiction to pornography or masturbation. It is especially intended for those who sincerely wish to escape the clutches of their addiction but find success elusive. Some points may have already been mentioned earlier in this series, but they are repeated here for emphasis and clarity.
- Don’t hide
Modern addictions to pornography and masturbation are almost always linked to internet and mobile device usage. A key principle in recovery is to eliminate secrecy. Establish a firm rule: I will only use my phone, computer, or laptop in public areas, in full view of others. This makes misuse nearly impossible.
Additionally, avoid locking devices with private passwords. If security requires a lock, ensure family members know the access code.
Transparency is a watertight safeguard against relapse.
- Install Blockers
Blocking adult content is a simple yet effective measure. On most devices, you can configure DNS settings:
Settings → More Connections → Private DNS → Manual → family.adguard-dns.com
This prevents both intentional and accidental exposure to inappropriate content.
Recommended software includes:
Qustodio: The free version of Qustodio can protect a single device and includes basic protection features. The smart filters block inappropriate content even in private browsing mode. The website is: https://www.qustodio.com
FamilyShield: This is a free service from OpenDNS. It is preconfigured to block adult content. The website is: https://www.opendns.com/setupguide/#familyshield
Norton Family: This service is currently being offered at no cost for 6 months. It blocks unsuitable sites. The website is: https://family.norton.com/web/
- Increase in Durood
Mufti Yusuf Moosajee (Hafizahullah) advises that excessive recitation of Durood Shareef, with the intention of overcoming addiction, brings freedom. Durood secures the Duas of Nabi ﷺ and the mercy of Allah Ta’ala.
Allah Ta’ala says in Surah Ahzaab:

He is the one who sends blessings upon you, together with his angels, to remove you from darkness (and take you) into light. And He is merciful to the believers. [Ahzaab:43]
Our Durood will secure the Duas of Nabi ﷺ, and the special mercy of Allah Ta’ala. The effect of these, according to the Ayah, will remove us from the darkness of pornography and take us into the light of the love of Allah Ta’ala.
- Istighfaar
The Mubarak Hadith encourages us;
مَنْ لَزِمَ الاستغفارَ جَعَلَ الله له من كل ضيق مَخرَجاً، ومن كل هم فرَجاً، ورزقَه من حيث لا يحتسب
Who holds firm to Istighfaar, Allah Ta’ala makes a way out for him from every constraint, and an escape from every worry, and Allah Ta’ala will grant him sustenance from incomprehensible sources. [Abu Dawood:1518]
Recite Ayate Kareemah (لَا إلٰهَ إلَّا أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إنِّيْ كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِيْنَ) a hundred times daily. Whilst reciting Durood and Istighfaar, make the Niyyah of ridding oneself of these addictions. Most certainly, Allah Ta’ala will Divinely assist us in recovering, with great ease and comfort.
- Be Picky About Your Company
Evil company is the quickest path to relapse. Familiar people, places, and habits act as triggers. Replace them with healthier alternatives. Abandon old circles and adopt new ones—preferably the company of the Ahlullah, the Masjid, and gatherings of Zikr. These are the best companions, places, and habits for recovery.
The easiest plan to achieve this is to replace the old with new, healthier habits. Give up your old friend circle, your preferred spots and habits, and in their places adopt healthier ones. And how simple it is for us! Which friends can be better than the Ahlullah! Which place can be better than the Masaajid! And which habit can be better than Zikrullah!
- Touch Grass
Nature is a powerful antidote to digital obsession. Reduce screen time drastically. Spend time outdoors—walk, breathe deeply, listen to birds, feel the sun’s warmth, and reflect on Allah Ta’ala’s creation. When the beauty of His creation fills the heart, the ugliness of imitation (pornography and masturbation) loses its appeal.
- Seek Professional Help
Do not let embarrassment prevent you from seeking counselling. True strength lies in admitting a problem and seeking help. Addiction is destructive, and professional guidance from psychologists or counsellors can be lifesaving. Courage and determination are required to take this step, but it is essential for recovery.
To be continued Inshallah.
