Advices to Resolve a Family Dispute

The following guidelines were shared to resolve a serious family dispute

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

  1. Our intention is to attain the pleasure of Allah Ta’ala. As I have said, to resolve issues, it requires magnanimous hearts. If there is a need to give more and take less – have conviction in the promise of Allah Ta’ala.
  2. In life we are bound by two vital principles; observance of rights and staying within limits – so before doing or saying anything, please ensure that we do not disobey Allah Ta’ala and that we do not usurp the rights of one another.
  3. It is imperative that we do not allow anyone to entertain any negative thoughts or talk ill of us in all circumstances. If our mistakes are brought to our notice, the need is to acknowledge our faults, rectify our habits and seek forgiveness from one another. This aspect is vital for the sustainability of family unity.
  4. The other thing is that all of us have different temperaments and we view things in our own unique ways. However, others will not identify with our views or give it any serious thought. The need therefore is to communicate to one another and make them understand with dignity and respect. To impose one’s point of view on others will ferment the problems even more. Again, let us overlook and talk to one another (not fight, argue or be loud).
  5. The aspect of having a soft spot for one person is only natural. However, we cannot slip into excesses or deficiencies in our interaction with one another.
  6. Let us clearly understand; the parent is the parent and the child is the child. The laws of Shariah are very clear on the rights of the parents. It is the duty of the children to make the parents feel wanted and not treat them as impediments.
  7. All affairs, especially financial have to be transparent. Never allow any ill feelings. At the same time, let us communicate with each other and never be secretive.
  8. Remember, a great act to earn the help of Allah Ta’ala is to mend family ties. On the converse, a heinous act that repels the mercy of Allah Ta’ala is compromising family ties.
  9. Lastly, be cheerful with each other and continuously make duaa for all.
