عن أبي وائل قال: ما شهد عبد اللہ مجمعا ولا مأدبة فيقوم حتی يحمد اللہ ويصلي على النبی صلى اللہ عليه وسلم وإن كان مما يتبع أغفل مكان فی السوق فيجلس فيه فيحمد اللہ ويصلي على النبی صلى اللہ عليه وسلم، (مصنف لابن ابی شيبة، رقم30429)
Hazrat Abu Waa’il رضى الله عنه mentions, “I have not seen Abdullah bin Mas’ood رضى الله عنه attending any gathering or invitation, except that he would praise and glorify Allah Ta’ala جل جلاله and recite Durood upon Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم. If he had to go to the market place, where he found people negligent of the remembrance of Allah Ta’ala جل جلاله, he would praise Allah Ta’ala جل جلاله, and recite Durood in those places.”
Durood Shareef is Mustahab in every Possible Permissible Occasion
Allamah Alauddeen Haskafi رحمه الله mentions regarding Durood Shareef in Durrul Mukhtar (1/518),
ومستحبة فى كل أوقات الإمكان
(Reciting Durood Shareef is) Mustahab in every possible (permissible) occasion.
I Will Not Leave out Recitation of Durood Shareef, in Whichever Condition or Place I May be in.
Shaikh Abu Hafs Samarqandi رحمه الله narrates an incident from his father regarding a person who was excessive in his Durood upon Rasulullah صلى اللہ عليه وسلم.
He says, “I heard a man reciting abundant Durood Shareef on Rasulullah صلى اللہ عليه وسلم wherever he was, in the haram, at his residence, in Arafah and Mina. Someone asked him that there are prescribed recitations for every occasion but why is he only Reciting Durood upon Rasulullah صلى اللہ عليه وسلم and not making dua and reciting Nafl Salah etc.?
This person responded. “I had left Khurasaan for Makkah Mukarramah to perform Hajj and my father was with me. When we reached Kufa my father fell very ill and passed away. When he passed away, I covered his face with a garment, and went away. When I returned and removed the garment from his face, I saw that his face had turned like that of a donkey. Upon seeing that I became extremely grieved and concerned regarding the cause of this. I said to myself, ‘How will I tell the people regarding my father in this condition?’ I sat close to him grieving and slumber overtook me.
In my sleep I saw that man came to us, removed the garment from my father, looked at him and passed his hand over him. Then he aksed me, ‘Why are you so sad?’ I said, ‘why will I not be sad when this is the condition of my father.’ He said, ‘cheer up! Allah Ta’ala has changed your father’s condition.’ Then I removed the covering from my father and saw that his face was shining like the full moon. So, I said to the person, ‘By the Qasam of Allah Ta’ala, who are you? Your arrival is so blessed.’ He said, ‘I am Mustapha صلى اللہ عليه وسلم.’ When he said that I became extremely pleased. I held a corner of his garment, rubbed it upon my hand and said, ‘O My Master, O Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم I ask you in the name of Allah Ta’ala, please inform me of the incident.’
He صلى الله عليه وسلم said, ‘Your father used to consume interest. It is the command of Allah Ta’ala that he changes the face of the one who consumes interest into a donkey’s face, either in this dunya or in the hereafter. However, your father’s habit was to recite 100 Durood upon me before sleeping every night. When he passed away and this became his condition due to consuming interest, the angel who presents to me my Ummati’s deeds, came to me and informed me of your father’s condition. I requested Allah Ta’ala and he allowed me to intercede for him.’
He says, ‘I woke up and removed the garment from my father’s face and indeed it was shining like the full moon on a moonlit light. I thanked Allah Ta’ala and made the arrangements for my father’s burial. After burying him I sat by his grave for a short while. Whilst I was half asleep, I saw a person mentioning, ‘do you know the reason why your father enjoyed the kindness?’ I said ‘No.’ He responded, ‘the reason is Durood Shareef upon Rasulullah صلى اللہ عليه وسلم.’ There and then I took a pledge with myself that I will not leave out recitation of Durood Shareef, in whichever condition or place I may be in.”
Important Qualification
Shaykh Muhammad Awwamah حفظه الله mentions writes under this incident,
Even though this glad-tiding may be correct for this person, it does not mean that this will occur for every consumer of interest whom Allah Ta’ala and his Rasul صلى اللہ عليه وسلم have announced war with.

Pious Personalities who Recited Durood Excessively
- Hazrat Soofi Aslam Sahib’s رحمه الله daily practice was to recite an amazing 125 000 durood shareef.

- Bibi Safiyya رحمها الله, the mother of Moulana Yahya Sahib and Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas Sahib رحمهما الله, used to recite 5000 Durood Shareef daily.

- It was the daily practice of the elders in the family of Hazrat Sheikh رحمه الله to recite 125 000 Durood Shareef daily.

- Khallaad Bin Katheer’s practice was to recite the following Durood 1000 times every Friday.
اَلَّلهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَي مُحَمَّدٍ النَّبِيِّ الْأُمِّيِّ

- Hazrat Bakhtyaar Kaaki رحمه الله would recite 3000 Durood Shareef every night before sleeping.

- Moulana Faizul Hassan Sahib رحمه الله had the habit of staying awake for the entire night occupying himself in recitation of Durood Shareef.

- Allamah Suyuti رحمه الله would make a continuous effort to recite Durood Shareef upon Nabi صلى الله عليه وسلم walking, standing, sitting, sleeping, and awakening (in all conditions).

- Mufti Abdullah Mia Sahib رحمه الله recited between 10 000 to 15 000 Durood daily.

- Hazrat Moulana Zubairul Hasan رحمه الله had fixed a very large amount of Durood Shareef for himself which he recited daily. He had a tasbih of a thousand beads made for himself to complete this amount.

- Moulana Haroon Abbasomar Sahib رحمه الله would recite 3000 Durood Shareef daily.
- A musalli of the Isipingo Beach Jaami Musjid had a habit of reciting 50 000 times Durood shareef during the night and day of Jumuah.
- Moulana Qaasim Sema Sahib’s رحمه الله family would recite 1000 Durood Shareef daily.
- The respected family of Hazrat Mufti Ebrahim Salejee Sahib حفظه الله would recite Durood Shareef 1000 times everyday.
May Allah Ta’ala جل جلاله bless us with all the virtues and blessings of Durood Shareef. Ameen
يَا رَبِّ صَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ دَائِمَاً أَبَدًا عَلَىْ حَبِيْبِكَ خَيْرِ الْخَلْقِ كُلِّهِمِ
“O Sustainer, shower Salaat and Salaam forever and ever upon Your beloved, who is the best of all creation.”
جَزَی اللّهُ عَنَّا نَبِيَّنَا مُحَمَّدًا صَلَّی الله عَلَیْه وسَلَّمَ بِمَا هُوَ أَهْلُهُ
May Allah Ta’ala جل جلاله reward our Nabi Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم on our behalf such a reward that is due to Him.
Pious Personalities who Recited Durood Excessively
